Observation Day #1

Today we had our first observation in grade 8 - Granite with Mam Mae Anne Paglingayen. The students learned about “Being a Filipino” and read a text entitled “Pinapinoy”. Mam Mae Anne began the lesson by playing a video of Filipinos on their vacation in a beautiful beach. The students then were asked to tell what they see in the video. Only some students raised their hand, and according to Mam Mae Anne, it is because they are shy.

The next activity was arranging jumbled letters to be words in classroom discussion. After that, Pinapinoy text was shown in the slide and students read it aloud. They were divided into two groups. One group read Pina dialogue and the other read Pinay. They then worked in group consists of 5 students to write characters of Filipino. Mam Mae Anne used a Styrofoam board with “Who am I?” written on it. The students posted their work around it. She then read those papers, but the students did not want if she read their name. Therefore, she just read the result of discussion without mentioning name of the group and its member.

After class, I went to faculty office with other English student-teacher. We had discussion with Mam Tuesday De Leon and Mam Marry Anne Buliagai, our faculty mentor. The discussion was about our assisting week and teaching week schedule. Ani and I were assigned to assist  Mam Mae Ann while Laila and Susan were assigned to assist  Mam Cherry. By drawing a lottery, we decided which grade we will observe and teach first in teaching week. I got grade 7.

I again got new Buddy because Mariella is majoring in Science. My new Buddy is Jearica. We went to my dorm and discuss about how we supposed to teach in PSU labschool, how the teaching procedure is. Jearica and I have the same hobby. We love reading, and I share my ebook with her.

At 4 PM we observed Dr. Gloria Capanang class, Grade 12 HUMMS- Plato. The topic is  Imaginative Vs Technical Writing. Mam Gloria first led students to pray, asked class secretary about attendance and presented the objectives.

Students were asked to write a description of themselves in 2-3 sentences in imaginative writing style. Four students read their writing in front of the class. Then, students worked in group to draw a woman. They presented their work in front of the class and explained why they draw the woman that way.

Mam Gloria then distributed copies of a poem entitled”Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelov. The students read the text silently. Then in the form of classroom discussion, Mam Gloria and the students answer questions related to the poem. The questions are:
1. What is the first thing you notice about the poem?2. What is the second thing
3. Why does she believe that she is phenomenal?
4. How was people attitude / reactions toward her  belief?

Before the class was dismissed, Mam Gloria asked some students to recite the difference between imaginative and technical writing.
