Trip to Vigan

On Friday, we went to Vigan. It is an old city retaining building from around 500 years ago as its tourist attraction. It took 7 hours by bus to arrive there. The first place we visited was Don Marino Marcos Memorial State University. The university president welcomed us and gave explanation about the facilities of the university. We stopped at the Sure Ilocos Sur beach and had our late lunch because it’s already 4 PM.

We bought some souvenir in the souvenir market. We also took picture in front of the market which is surrounded by old buildings. In the evening, we sit around a big pool in the city center to watch dancing fountains. It was really beautiful. We arrived in our dorm at 3 AM and we all were exhausted.

Assisting Day #4

I assisted Mam Mae Anne in grade 7 to teach Dewey Decimal System. In the beginning of the lesson, I explained about library card catalogue is. What information they find in it and how it helps them in their visit to library.

Mam Mae Anne continued by explaining Dewey Decimal System and the number under which certain book will be categorized. I then lead an activity to check their understanding. We made 4 groups and played a game. I mentioned a title of the book and the quickest group to answer the right call number and the category gained 100 as their score. The group with the highest score was the winner. The students were excited even thought there was not any prize for the winner.

Assisting Day #3

High school teachers had a meeting today. Ani and I was asked to replace Mam Anne to teach grade 7 and 8. At 8:00 we came to grade 8 Quartz and discuss about the moral lesson of “The Hands of the Blacks”. Then, students categorized list of adjectives based on the function. The same activities were done in grade 8 Granite from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. In grade 7 for both classes, we administered quiz on short and long vowel I.

After lunch I worked on my lesson plan. I decided to use "Kbo Iwo" as my parallel text in the first lesson plan after I revised the text a little bit. For the second day, I studied the curriculum to find the focus of the lesson. The topic was content and function words. It was actually under Listening Comprehension domain (DepEd English Curriculum for Grade 8). I began to design the activities and find the media.

Assisting Day #2

I worked on my lesson plan for second day in the morning before going to school. I arrived in the school at 10:00 AM and assisted Mam Mae Anne in teaching short vowel I /I/ and long vowel I /i/. I explained minimal pairs to help students understand better. They worked in group to identify whether the words have long or short vowel I in pronunciation.

After lunch, I and other English teachers from Indonesia had meeting related to our lesson plans with faculty mentors and supervisors. There were a few parts that I need to revise. Mam Tuesday suggested that I use Myth from Indonesia as the parallel text to Samal Genesis.

I went back to dorm with Jearica. She helped me to revise my lesson plan. She stayed until 7 PM because there would be no bus to her home after that hour. I cooked my dinner and worked on parallel text once again. It was difficult to find a well written text of Indonesian myth in English.

Assisting Day #1

In the morning on Monday, SEA-Teacher with all PSU students joined the flag ceremony. Then, I went to school with other English student teacher. I assisted Mam Mae Anne Paglingayen in Grade 7, Hydrogen and Helium class. They had a quiz about proverb today. Half an hour was used to do the test and the other half was used to check on the students’ answer together. Mam Mae Anne asked me to talk and discuss the answer of the questions in quiz with the students. They also checked their seatmate’s answer sheet.

I went back to dorm after class to finish my lesson plan. At 2 PM I was back at school to hand it in to Mam Mae Anne. She said she would see it and pass it to my faculty mentors, Mam Tuesday De Leon and Mam Marry Anne Buliagay. In the afternoon, I noted students' quiz score on their attendance list.

Trip to Hundred Islands

The first tourism place that I visited in Philippine was
Hundred Island in Alaminos City. It took 4 hours to arrive in the city by bus. We completed a form in the tourism office at the harbor and got in the boat. Mam Sally told us not to buy anything in the harbor because later she would accompany us to souvenir shops.

We got into a boat and after half an hour we stopped in an island called Quezon Island. We had our lunch there. Mam Sally cooked Fried chicken and fermented fish.

We also visited another island. It is called Governor Island. I climbed so many steps of stair to get to the highest place on the island so that all islands of Hundred Islands can be seen.

When we arrived at the harbor, it was already 5 PM. We bought key chains and some souvenirs. In the way back to dorm, we stopped at McDonal to get our dinner and ate on the bus.

Observation Day #3

The first observation today was done in Grade 7-Hydrogen with Mam Mae Ann Paglingayen. We came late to class because Susan printed her lesson plan in the students’ organization room. I asked one of the college students there to write my greeting for students of PPG SM3T V. We were unable to see how Mam Mae Anne began her class. We arrived when she was instructing students to work in group to match definitions with words. After that students drew picture that described the lesson theme, which was “My World, Our World”.

The students brought their coloring pencils as Mam Mae Anne instructed the day before. She gave students ten minutes to finish their picture. When the time was up, she asked students to post their drawing on the black board. Most of the groups drew the earth, but there was one group that intended to draw the flag of Philippines. It was a pity that they did not finish their drawing.
Group 1 was working on their drawing

Mam Mae Anne then asked one representative of each group to describe their pictures especially about how it depicted their life and their world.
The rest of the class time was used to discuss the text the students read before class. It was entitled “ How the World Begins”. The teacher gave some comprehension questions orally. The class was ended after they conclude the moral lesson of the story.

The Last observation for the week was in Grade 10 with Ms Cherry Joy F. Mejia. The theme of class discussion is Greece and Greek. The teacher presented some pictures and discussed with students what they knew about those pictures. Students have read text related to the theme before class.

Then, Mam Cherry assigned students to work in group. Their task was to complete a chart posted in front of the class.
In the end of the class, the teacher asked students to sit in group planning what Greek culture they were going to perform next week.

Mam Jessica was explaining aboout Manga
Mam Jessica then explained briefly about the influence of technology in Literature. She also brought a copy of Manga. Some students did not know what Manga is, and most of them are not familiar with the one Mam Jessica gave to them. Actually, it was Naruto. She then asked them to read manga as their assignment.

Clarivy, Laila’s Buddy, cooked Chicken Tinola for our lunch. It is chicken soup with papaya. It’s masarap (delicious). Maraming salamat po, Clarivy. After lunch, I went to teachers' office in High School building to get our teaching schedule and topics from Mam Mae Anne.

We then observed Mam Virginia Geslani’s class, which is grade 11 HUMMS-Wordsworth at 2 PM. Mam Virginia began class by showing pictures of people who are sad and quarrelling. She asked students to read objectives shown in slide. Then, she explained about miscommunication caused of three dimensions. Students worked in group to perform a kind of miscommunication and other group guessed what dimension caused it. However, there was a minor problem in group presentation because students did not understand the instruction. They mention in what dimension example of miscommunication that they performed. Mam Virgiania did not correct or give explanation about how they should perform therefore the same mistake occurred again when group 4 performed. Before the class was dismissed, she asked some students to conclude the lesson.

Mam Tuesday treated us ice cream in the afternoon. After that, I went to wet market to buy fruits and vegetables. I also bought an umbrella.
